So, if you put the events of MM2 in 96 it would make so much more sense.Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action film co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller. It's hard to tell who started it, but everyone was involved and everyone got screwed over, nuclear winter etc.

The growing tensions escalated and someone pushed the button. I wouldn't say that there was truce during the events of MM2 because there was no war then, just a giant economic crisis that had already spiralled out of control. People fled from cities out into the wastelands (MM2)

That caused fuel shortages & the global economic crisis (during which MM takes place).

"Two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all" - talking about setting the oil fields on fire. All out conventional war that left the oil fields devastated.

Initially the war was in the Persian Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The whole apocalypse thing as I see it (and I do have some documents to prove it): Mad Max 2 takes place 2 years after the first one, so if MM was in 94, it'd make RW in 96, not 2001.
